A Message from the Bureau President David Zunker:

Everyone is asking how the summer’s going to go – how do bookings look, how about retail sales, how are the restaurants doing? So, I guess it’s time to dust off the old crystal ball and take a stab at prognosticating. After all, it’s probably a reasonable warm-up for handicapping anyway…although, hopefully the results are better.

First of all, we here in Saratoga are blessed to have a highly desirable destination with a wide range of quality lodging properties, diverse dining options, major attractions and a recognized reputation for quality and value. That said, we’re still in the midst of a challenging economy with plenty of elements in place over which we have little or no control.

All you have to do is check your own personal plans for travel in the next several months, weighing all the considerations that go into a travel decision to get a sense of what meeting planners are facing. Then take it up a level to those who play a part in planning a meeting, a conference or a convention – the boards and committees that consider location, ease of access, price and amenities. Then take it up yet another level to the ultimate decision-maker, the one with the balance sheet, looking at whether this meeting has to happen at all. Now you know the challenges we face at the Bureau and those that we share with lodging, restaurant, retail and attractions partners. We have to show value, stay front and center when decisions are being made and hope that Saratoga – for all the right reasons – is an easy choice.

So how will the summer go? Well, it’s shaping up pretty well. NYRA is optimistic about the meet. SPAC has already had success and saw record attendance numbers for JazzFest, despite the seemingly perpetual rain. Lodging properties report good, but not great bookings for July, but strong numbers for August and by September, hopefully, there will be light at the end of this national economic malaise tunnel.

We’re cautiously optimistic. We’re much better off than many of our New York neighbors, thanks partly to Saratoga being Saratoga, and thanks mostly to the extra effort that sales, marketing and management in all hospitality venues have put in to “work the room” and keep our name out there, reacting to consumer demands and staying flexible.

It’s also a proven fact that we provide some of the best customer service around – but we can always do better. That’s why we at the Bureau encourage you to attend the July 7 seminar at the Saratoga Springs City Center, which begins at 8:30 am, and features Convention Bureau member Erica Dietz moderating. Send several of your colleagues – it’s free, sponsored by the Bureau, the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association. Just call the Chamber at 584-3255 to make a reservation.

Also, don’t forget about all the 4th of July weekend festivities in downtown Saratoga Springs and have a wonderful July!

Saratoga has been the proud and happy home of the Empire State Society of Association Executives (ESSAE) Annual June Trade show for the past couple of years. The 2009 show, which took place on June 25th, brought in record attendance, which in turn made for a lively and exciting trade show floor! This years Expo theme was “Playing to Win”, and exhibitors were encouraged to incorporate fun and games into their booths and designs. The theme provided us with an excellent opportunity to incorporate our backyard marketing mission, and it was a natural choice to host a backyard BBQ in our booth, complete with games, picnic tables, Adirondack Chairs, a huge charcoal grill and plenty of Saratoga water and S’mores for all! We received a great response from our attendees and finished the day receiving RFP’s for over 15 meetings! We are currently following up with all who came by to see us and are working closely with our hotels and attractions to bring more meetings home to our backyard!

Convention Services Update:

The New York Conference of Mayors is celebrating 100 years at their annual conference this week in Saratoga Springs, NY. Their attendance is above expectations and the group participated in the Bureau’s Dine Around program on Monday evening. It was a huge success. Thank You – NYCOM!

Kathy Denkenberger, Convention Services Director, was invited to speak with a group last week telling them “all there is to do in Saratoga”. The group was certainly enjoying their time in Saratoga and very anxious to get out and explore.

Johnny Miller Adventures teamed up with the Saratoga Convention and Tourism Bureau to create a very special experience for an International group’s visit to Saratoga Springs. The group was thrilled and energized as they experienced the Hudson River and Champlain Canal from the seat of a kayak. “I guided 30 kayakers from over 10 countries, which included officials from Honduras, Gambia and Belize, through Lock 5 of the Champlain Canal in Schuylerville”, stated Johnny Miller, professional guide and kayak instructor. SEE PICTURE!

The group’s experience was enhanced through professional guiding and photography services provided by Johnny Miller Adventures that highlighted the history, culture and nature of Saratoga Springs. In addition to the canal kayaking expedition, the group had an opportunity to experience a historic bicycle tour of the Saratoga National Battlefield and a nature walking adventure at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve. As a special gift for the group, that helped build a positive relationship with the professional services of the Convention and Tourism Bureau and its membership, Johnny sent his guests home with custom designed photographs for them to remember their time spent in Saratoga. You can learn more about enhancing your group’s visit to Saratoga Springs through adventure and photography at www.johnnymilleradventures.com or by calling Johnny directly at 518-424-3986.
