The Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, in partnership with the Saratoga Springs Public Library, is excited to announce the launch of their spring 2024 Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series. This community lecture series is designed to highlight the rich history, culture, and traditions of our city.
All Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series programs are free and open to the public. Each program takes place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Dutcher Community Room, Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Thursday, September 12, 2024: “LifeWorks Community Action. Help Starts Here”
Krystle Nowhitney Hernandez, Executive Director of LifeWorks Community Action (formerly Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council or EOC), will discuss the history, growth and current activities of LifeWorks’ Immigrant Services & Latino Community Advocacy Program. LifeWorks’ Immigrant Services helps immigrants navigate life in a new community by offering immigration legal services, interpreting, referrals and resource navigation, English classes and more. Bilingual, professional staff serve our immigrant neighbors in the Northern Capital region and seasonally at the Saratoga Race Course Backstretch.
Thursday, October 10, 2024: “A Heritage in Poetry & Song”
Joseph Bruchac, Saratoga Spring’s first Poet Laureate, and Jesse Bruchac will be performing original poems accompanied by new and traditional Abenaki music with flute, drum and guitar, reflecting the rich history and Native heritage of our region. Please join us for this unique program!
Thursday, November 14, 2024: “Saratoga County's Revolutionary War Patriot Burials”
With the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution on the horizon, there has been renewed interest in locating and honoring our nation's first veterans. Join Saratoga County Historian Lauren Roberts to learn about the Patriot Burial Historic Marker Program offered in partnership with the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). She will also discuss the work being done in the county to commemorate the veterans and reveal a few fascinating stories of these Revolutionary War Patriots.
Thursday, December 12, 2024: “The Kayaderosseras Patent”
Lorie Wies, a retired local History Librarian, will be discussing the settling by Europeans in the Saratoga region and why it was not possible until the resolution of the Kayaderosseras Patent. The story of the 70-year process is marked by corruption, greed and intrigue…. a fascinating tale!
