Slow Breathing in Winter: 3 Saratoga Spots to Recharge Your Mind and Body

Written by Sarah Hutcherson, Owner of Slo Breathworks

Winter doesn’t always usher in the urge to step outside, especially with shorter days and colder temperatures that can leave you feeling sluggish or drained. I know that when it’s cold out, especially below that 28 degree mark, I lean into urgency when taking my dog on a walk but there is more evidence, like this 2023 NIH study about the benefits of mindful outdoor walking, that shows how intentionally getting outside, no matter the season, can help support your mental and emotional health.

Slowing down your breath while outside can also support your health and well-being. Conscious, slow breathing helps to reset your nervous system, reduce stress, and boost energy as shown in a 2023 Nature Journal review. Slow breathing is a powerful tool for restoring that elusive balance and clarity in this 2025 world, especially when you can see your breath in the chill Saratoga air.

Here are three refreshing spots in Saratoga to consciously breathe that are made especially beautiful and relaxing by winter. Find your way to one of them and hit play on one of these Slo Breathworks’ breath recordings. Discover how the combination of fresh air and gentle breaths can support your physical and mental health.

Slow Breathing Spot #1 - A Willow Tree in Congress Park

Sit down on the nearby boulder or stand under the willow to breathe in Congress Park’s raw beauty during the winter. Since the willow is without its leaves this time of year, you can take in more of the park, the sky, and the surroundings as you mindfully breathe.

Slow Breathing Spot #2 - The Mural in the Alleyway Across From Harvey’s

While this location is made up mostly of concrete and bricks, it is a sweet spot to consciously breathe in winter as the upcoming season of spring comes to life in the mural – especially if you are craving some warmth. As you slow down your exhales here, name different elements in the mural after each exhale as another technique to regulate.

Slow Breathing Spot #3  - Alongside Spring Run

This spot on the Spring Run trail is preciously peaceful in this season of winter. The creek is slow with patches of ice meandering on its surface and the snow muffles its tranquil trickle (if it happens to be on the ground). Practice lengthening your inhale here as the water runs underneath you.
