History isn’t just something that happened 250 years ago. In Saratoga County, it’s something we live every day.
While the national America250 celebration culminates on July 4th, 2026, for us in Saratoga County it marks the start of an exciting countdown toward the autumn of 2027: the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga.
This was the Turning Point of the American Revolution. It was the moment that convinced the world that American independence was possible. As we look ahead to the grand celebrations in 2027, you can learn about and experience the history of this momentous victory right now.
Here is how you can begin your own 250th journey today.
Explore the Revitalized Battlefield
If you haven't visited the Saratoga National Historical Park recently, now is the time. In preparation for the 250th, the park has undergone significant improvements.
- Accessibility & Interpretation: Thanks to recent upgrades, the tour road stops have been updated with new, fully accessible paths and state-of-the-art interpretive signage.
- The Turning Point Film: Start at the Visitor Center to watch this short film that sets the stage for the drama that unfolded on these fields in September and October of 1777.
Bring History to Life with AR
You don't have to wait for a reenactment to see a soldier! The Saratoga250 commission has launched an innovative augmented reality (AR) platform that you can now experience. By using your smartphone at specific historic markers throughout the county, you can see 3D characters from the Revolutionary War come to life to tell their stories in their own words. It’s a fantastic way to engage with the important figures of the Revolution.
Join the Siege Weekend Tradition
While the main anniversary is in 2027, the Siege Living History Weekend is scheduled for October 10th and 11th, 2026. Mark this weekend in your calendar where you can:
- Explore the Historic Sites of the County: Pick up a Siege Weekend Passport and travel to sites like the Schuyler House, Fort Hardy Park, and the Stillwater Blockhouse.
- Collect Stamps: As you visit these locations, you can collect stamps and earn commemorative items. It’s a great way to explore the full footprint of the 1777 campaign before the crowds arrive for the big anniversary.
Follow the Knox Trail
We recently celebrated the 250th anniversary of Henry Knox’s Noble Train of Artillery. You can still follow the trail of the Knox Markers across the county, from Waterford up through Schuylerville. These granite markers trace the superhuman feat of transporting 60 tons of cannon through the winter wilderness, a mission that was vital to the eventual success at Saratoga.
Be Part of the Legacy: Volunteer
A celebration this large requires a citizen army of its own. The Campaign for Saratoga 250 is looking for volunteers to help with everything from educational programming to event logistics.
Looking to get involved with Saratoga’s 250th anniversary and help connect the story of America’s Turning Point to the next generation? This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to be part of American history.
